The dependence on mobile operators is often much greater with IoT projects than with regular mobile connectivity. After all, what happens when there is a change in mobile coverage?

An IoT solution is often site-specific, with a greater dependence on coverage and no direct involvement or intervention by employees on location.

For this reason, it is crucial for many companies to think about the (strategic) procurement of connectivity services for their IoT project.

One of the most important aspects in this is (in)dependency and flexibility. Dependence on traditional operators who are less flexible to move with the needs of the market. Flexibility towards the future so that you are not dependent on a supplier again.

For this reason, the GSMA has developed a standard that is often known as eSIM. Unfortunately, this term is often misused.

The actual terminology is RSP (Remote Sim Provisioning) in combination with eUICC compatible SIM cards. These SIM cards come in different forms (plastic and embedded).

With this technology, it is possible to overcome the limitations of traditional SIM cards whose keys are held by the telecom operator. Changes of profiles can be digitized with this solution and no physical switch on location is needed anymore. This ensures a better negotiating position and higher shareholder value for the company that adopted IoT within their organization.
